Tomotherapy

   radiation beams

Note, that despite the recent interest in seed implants, the results with external beam using 3-D techniques may be as good (or better) and have less toxicity. One recent study (Zelefsky. J Clin Onc 1999;17:517) compared external beam (70Gy by 3D) with a seed implant (150Gy by I125) in favorable patients (i.e. PSA 10 or less, GS 6 or less and stage T2b or less) and found the external beam had better results (88% bNED/5y) than the implant (82%) and with less side effects. Also note that young patients do as well as older patients treated with radiation. There is more evidence that results are better with IMRT compared to 3d conformal (go here) and it's expected IGRT and ART (e.g. Tomotherapy) will be even better when more long term results become available.

as noted in the graphs below survival depends on the risk category and the use of a high enough dose of radiation
