Robert Joseph Scanlon was
born in Alliance, Ohio on September 15, 1931 and graduated from Alliance High School. On
July 10,1950, shortly after the Korean War began, he enlisted in the Navy and eventually
shipped out on the Sea Plan Tender, USS PINE. While aboard the Pine Island in 1951 he
received orders to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, MD and while there
he received an appointment to the Naval Academy and became a Midshipman in July 1, 1952.
