In 2008 there were 54,900 new cases of kidney
cancer and 13,010 deaths from this cancer. Renal cell carcinoma
accounts for 2% of all malignancies and the incidence has been
increasing by 2% per year over the last 65 years (for unknown
reasons). The overall survival is about 65% at 5 years. The
estimated 5 year survival by stage is 96% for stage I, 82% for
stage II, 64% for stage III and 23% for stage IV. The cure rate is clearly related to stage as noted here and here. There are numerous tables showing survival by stage (e.g. here). But note that much of this data is from older time periods and may not be accurate particularly with the introduction of the new molecularly targeted therapies (e.g. Sutent) that may dramatically improve survival rates . |
