pet_breast1.jpg (3492 bytes) Left breast cancer

The FDG PET exam on the left  is from a 53 year old female patient being evaluated for a right upper lobe pulmonary nodule detected on CT scan. The pulmonary lesion demonstrates no abnormal FDG accumulation strongly suggestive of a benign lesion. An unanticipated finding was focal FDG accumulation in the upper left breast which proved to be due to an infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Note the symmetric uptake in the posterior lower cervical muscles which can be seen in tense patients. Some laryngeal tracer accumulation is also seen and can be attributed to talking. Other areas of physiologic tracer accumulation can be seen in the myocardium, kidneys and collecting systems, urinary bladder, gastrointestinal tract, liver, spleen, and marrow.
