Patrick F. Scanlon III

 
Patrick Scanlon III was born in Sligo, City, County Sligo, Ireland on February 23, 1838 and was on of six children of Patrick Scanlon II and Unknown Fisher (other children include Timothy, Hester, John). He came to American in 1855 and entered through New York when he was 17. He lived in New York and married Anna Gehring on about 1860 and had several children (Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Ella and John.) They lived in PA and by 1880 had moved to Alliance, Ohio. Anna Gehring Scanlon died sometime between 1874 and 1880.

In about 1883 or 1884 he married Mary (Karper) Glasser who was a widow with a young son, William who was born in 1878. In 1885 Pat borrowed $300 from his father-in-law, Frank Karper, to purchase a two story frame building which continaed both living quarters and agrocery store at 636 N Freedom Ave. in Alliance. The loan was paid off in 1888. Pat and Mary had two children , Mary (Mame) Scanlon Britton (1884) and Patrick IV (July 26, 1886.)

In addition to being a grocer, Pat was prominent in local political circles. He was a delegate in 1889 to the Stark County Democratic convention. He died of a heart attack on June 28, 1899. (see the obit). New York passenger list
