A modern radiation therapy facility should have both low energy (6 million volt) as well as high energy (18 million volt) X-rays and electron beam capability. There should be immobilization devices to ensure the patient is in the proper position and computer treatment planning technology that will allow the beam to be focused in a manner that will conform (conformal therapy) to the patient's anatomy in 3 dimensions utilizing CT scans. Many centers now also have access to an HDR (high-dose-rate) device that allows the radiation to be inserted directly into the tumor or inside a diseased organ (brachytherapy.)
