Esophagus cancer is a serious malignancy with a relatively low cure rate. Many patients are not candidates for surgery and in the past were commonly treated with palliative (low dose) radiation. Now most patients get chemo-radiation which has better results and which may be equal to the results seen with surgery (see treatment sections above and she the guidelines from the NCCN here.)

Radiation 9 months 10 - 12%  0 - 7%
