The oldest test was a barium swallow or upper GI exam. Also useful is a CT scan (CT #2) , and normal CT#3, and CT#4, through the chest and cross sectional anatomy here and here.
Esophageal ultrasound are being used to measure the depth of the tumor invasion without surgery (see another pic here).
