James D. Miller, 91, of Seminole & Pinellas Park, Fla., died Oct. 7, 2008. James was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. Within days he and his mother returned to the family's dairy farm near Alliance, Ohio. James was the oldest of three brothers. He attended the nearby one-room Uniontown school and graduated from Sebring High School. James began a study of engineering at Kent State and later Ohio State, but World War II interrupted his studies. James was drafted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 11, 1941 -- 10 months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Four months after Pearl Harbor, James left for the South Pacific as a member of the Signal Company of the 37th Infantry Division. Two years later he returned to New Jersey to attend Officer Candidate School; and after graduation, James again went overseas as a Signal Officer with the 191st Signal Repair Company in the China-Burma-India region. James returned from the war and married Rosemary Scanlon in 1946. Rosemary and James had eight children and a loving marriage of over 61 years. James worked for Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 38 years holding numerous technical and leadership positions in Alliance, East Liverpool and Cleveland. James was a member of the Knights of Columbus. James and Rosemary moved to Florida in 1978. James is survived by his brother, Donald Miller of North Palm Beach, Fla.; seven children, Peggy, James, Robert, Brian, Mary Ellen, Kevin and Tom; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Pinellas Park, Fla. There will also be a burial ceremony at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Seminole, Fla. Cars will be led to the gravesite at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to The Hospice Foundation of the Florida Suncoast, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, Fla. 33760 or your local Hospice.
