In order to use this table, first determine the histology, either anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) or grade III glioma (which is better) or Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM which is worse.) The consider the patient's mental status (MS, i.e. how mentally impaired he is from the tumor) then consider the patient's overall functional status (Karnofsky Score which is explained elsewhere.) Then also consider the duration of the symptoms (if the tumor has come on rapidly, less than 3 months, that is more serious.) Then based on age you can fit the patient into one of the prognostic classes (I through VI) |
Class |
Age | Histo | MS | KS | Sym.Dur. |
| I | < 50y | AA | normal | ||
| II | >50y | AA | 70-100 | > 3mos | |
| III | <50y | AA | abn | ||
| <50y | GBM | 90-100 | |||
| IV | <50y | GBM | <90 | ||
| >50 | AA | 70-100 | < 3 mos | ||
| >50y | GBM | working | 70-100 | ||
| V | >50y | GBM | can't work | 70-100 | |
| >50y | GBM | biopsy only | 70-100 | ||
| >50y | <70 | ||||
| VI | >50y | GBM | biopsy | 70-100 | low dose XRT |
| >50y | abn | <70 |
Histo (histology, either anaplastic astrocytoma or glioblastoma) MS (mental status) KS (Karnofsky Score) Sym Dur (duration of symptoms) low dose XRT (< 54Gy) |
