In order to use this table, first determine the histology, either anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) or grade III glioma (which is better) or Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM which is worse.)

The consider the patient's mental status (MS, i.e. how mentally impaired he is from the tumor) then consider the patient's overall functional status (Karnofsky Score which is explained elsewhere.)

Then also consider the duration of the symptoms (if the tumor has come on rapidly, less than 3 months, that is more serious.) Then based on age you can fit the patient into one of the prognostic classes (I through VI)

RTOG Malignant Glioma Prognostic Groups

Class

Age Histo MS KS Sym.Dur.
I < 50y AA normal
II >50y AA   70-100 > 3mos
III <50y AA abn
  <50y GBM   90-100
IV <50y GBM   <90
  >50 AA   70-100 < 3 mos
  >50y GBM working 70-100
V >50y GBM can't work 70-100
  >50y GBM biopsy only 70-100
  >50y     <70
VI >50y GBM biopsy 70-100 low dose XRT
  >50y   abn <70

Histo (histology, either anaplastic astrocytoma or glioblastoma) MS (mental status) KS (Karnofsky Score) Sym Dur (duration of symptoms) low dose XRT (< 54Gy)
